Signage

A sign shall be posted in each location, stall or stand which indicates procedures for touching, tasting and other food safety considerations given the commodity and location.

Signs should be large and posted in locations where customers can see and understand that Farmers Markets have minimum standards for food safety. 

Customers should be casually observed to ensure there are no gross violations of the visitor standards.

Clean Clothing

Clean clothing that has the appearance of cleanliness shall be worn by Farmers Market Personnel.

Farmers should refrain where possible from wearing clothes normally reserved for farming.

Difficult to enforce and inspectors should only make recommendations or suggestions with this standard.

Restrooms

Restrooms should be provided on an estimated 1 per 25 customers.  These restrooms should be easy to walk to, accessible and fully stocked with paper, water, soap and checked frequently for cleanliness.

This is an important standard and care should be taken to ensure customers are aware of locations and necessity to use these and not use the field for such purposes.

Inspectors shall enforce this standard.

Control of Children

Customer children should not be allowed to wander into the food display area or stand.

Children need to be controlled for a variety of reasons including food safety.

Inspectors should make recommendations and suggestions.

Hand-washing

Hand-washing should be emphasized at every opportunity with wash locations and hand sanitizers.

Signage should suggest frequent hand-washing before and during picking.

 

Farm Containers

The farm should provide containers to place selected fruit that are clean and serviceable.

These containers shall be cleaned between use or disposable containers provided such as an environmentally correct bag.

Customer brought containers may not be used for picking.

Fruit or fruit containers shall not be placed on the ground and no one shall select fruit on the ground

 

Fruit shall not be placed on the ground, picked up from the ground

Any fruit touching the ground is considered not food safe.

 

Only touching what is purchased.

Touched fruit is purchased fruit.  If touched fruit is not desired it should be discarded on the ground.

 

 

Removal of Trash

Customers should be provided containers where to discard trash.

Discarding trash on the ground is unacceptable.

 

 

Lot Numbering

Purchased product shall be numbered with the date of purchase.

Bags and containers shall be numbered with the date of purchase.

This may be accomplished with a pen, stamp or sticker.
